SUMMARY:Tisha B’Av Film Schedule 2023
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Park East Synagogue’s Film Society\nRegina Gil\, Chairperson\nCourtesy of Gold Coast Arts Center \nFilm Lineup: \n\n\n\n \nThose Who Remained\nWatch the trailer \n2019 ‧ Drama/Narrative ‧ 1h 23m\nDirected by Barnabás Tóth\nWritten by Klára MuhiBarnabás\, TóthZsuzsa and F. Várkonyi \nA lyrical story of the healing power of love in the midst of national conflict\, loss and trauma\, Those Who Remained reveals the healing process of Holocaust survivors through the eyes of a young girl in post-World War II Hungary. Part of the idea of the film\, directed by Barnabas Toth and based on a novel by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi\, is that only survivors could understand the solace that Klara and Aldo find in their tentative parent-daughter bond. But the trauma of the war and sorrow over the dead lingers for its two main characters\, who become part of each other’s lives\, more or less as replacements. \n* The actors speak Hungarian in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n \nThe Conference\nWatch the trailer \n2022 ‧ War/Drama ‧ 1h 52m\nDirected by Matti Geschonneck\nWritten by Magnus Vattrodt and Paul Mommertz \nA fictionalized TV film on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the historical event\, based on the minutes of the meeting written by Adolf Eichmann at the time. \nOn January 20\, 1942\, high-ranking representatives of the German Nazi regime met in an idyllic villa on the Great Wannsee in the southwest of Berlin for a meeting that went down in history as the Wannsee Conference\, because of its scope\, fatality and consequences\, perhaps the most terrible conference of human history. Present are 15 leading men of the SS\, the NSDAP and the ministerial bureaucracy. The exclusive topic of the approximately 90-minute discussion is what the National Socialists called the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”\, which means the bureaucratically strictly planned organization of the systematic mass murder of millions of Jews from all over Europe. \n* The actors speak German in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n \nExodus 91: The untold story of Operation Solomon\nWatch the trailer \n2023 ‧ Docu-Drama ‧ 1h 30m\nDirected by Micah Smith\nWritten by Eitan Anner \nA docu-narrative film that tells the story of Asher Naim\, an Israeli diplomat caught between worlds and facing a crisis of faith in himself and his country. Asher\, a North-African Jew himself\, is sent to Ethiopia to negotiate the escape of 15\,000 Ethiopian Jews from a country collapsing under famine and civil war. Working with his Ethiopian-Israeli colleagues who\, themselves\, immigrated to Israel a decade earlier\, Asher and his partners begin to question if the Israeli government is serious or using the operation as part of an elaborate publicity stunt against claims that “Zionism is Racism.” With rebel forces closing in on the capital\, Asher’s faith in his mission is put to the test as he navigates the treacherous world of bureaucracy and politics in Ethiopia\, Israel\, and the US. Exodus 91 takes viewers behind the scenes – and behind the spin – of Operation Solomon\, the diplomatic and military mission to bring thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in the midst of Ethiopia’s brutal civil war. The feature-length film explores challenging questions of racism\, white saviour-ism\, homeland\, cultural identity\, the politics of immigration\, and the hardships of these immigrants\, and those that followed them\, to this day. \n* The actors speak Hebrew and English in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tehorah featuring Adrienne Haan\, Chanteuse Internationale
DESCRIPTION:Gail and Joseph Barry\, under the patronage of the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations\, Ambassador Gilad Erdan and Rabbi Arthur Schneier of Park East Synagogue\, will present international chanteuse Adrienne Haan in Tehorah (“pure” in Hebrew)\, a heartbreaking\, promising musical journey about loss\, hope and forgiveness on Wednesday\, May 10 at 8:00pm at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. \nThe evening\, written\, directed\, and performed by Ms. Haan\, will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel and will be comprised of songs composed and written by Jewish composers and librettists sung in German\, Yiddish and Hebrew.   \nTehorah is an historical\, poetic portrait that musically tells the story of the founding of Israel – from 1920’s Weimar Berlin to the ghetto of Łódź all the way to the Promised Land. \nMs. Haan will be supported on stage by a string quartet led by her Musical Director Udi Gershuni on piano\, with Leerone Hakami (violin)\, Maya Lorenzen (violin)\, Ella Bukszpan (viola) and Tamar Sagiv (cello). \nTickets are priced at $65 and $75 and can be obtained online here and in person at the Carnegie Hall box office.

SUMMARY:Passover 5783
DESCRIPTION:Services schedule HERE. \nOrder Shmurah Matzah HERE. \nDonate to the Passover Fund HERE. \nGUIDE TO PASSOVER \nBedikat Chametz – Search for Chametz \nThis year the search for Chametz will take place on Tuesday\, April 4 after 8:00pm. All homes should be cleansed of Chametz prior to the search. After sundown the search for any leftover Chametz takes place. This search is customarily done with a candle but contemporary authorities instruct us to use electric lights as well to ensure that no crumb escapes our sight. The head of the household renounces possession of all Chametz unknown to him/her remaining in the house. \nErev Pesach – Fast of the first born \nThis year the eve of Passover occurs on Wednesday\, April 5. All first-born Jewish males are to fast as an expression of gratitude to God who spared the Jewish first-born when their Egyptian counterparts were slain. Participation in a siyum\, the completion of the study of a Talmudic tractate\, is accepted in lieu of fasting. On Wednesday\, April 5\, Morning Services will take place at 7:30am followed by Rabbi Harold Einsidler’s siyum on a Tractate\, followed by a festive breakfast. The traditional biur chametz\, the burning of the Chametz\, will take place on Wednesday\, on the first floor playground\, no later than 11:30am. No Chametz may be eaten after 10:15am on Wednesday\, April 5. All leftovers must be disposed of by 11:30am.  \nChametz can be consumed starting Thursday\, April 13 at 9:00pm
