He was also one of the groundbreaking photographers of the 20th century – a brilliant artist whose body of work spans decades\, continents\, and the catastrophic fallout from two world wars. Though his pioneering microscopy transformed the nature of science photography\, Roman Vishniac is best known for his iconic images of Jewish life in Eastern Europe from 1935 through 1938. Few predicted that less than a decade later\, these communities would be wiped out\, and Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world. Now for the first time\, his story comes to life as a feature documentary. A retrospective and family saga\, VISHNIAC is narrated by Vishniac’s daughter Mara. She grew up in his shadow and sought to break free of his grip\, only to eventually come around and embrace his legacy. \n* The actors speak English in this film\n\n\n \nMartha Liebermann: A Stolen Life\nWatch the trailer \nBegins at 2:45PM \n2022 ‧ Biopic/Drama ‧ 1h 28m\nDirected by Stefan Bühling\nWritten by Marco Rossi \nA brief summary of the life of Martha Liebermann\, the wife of famous impressionist painter Max Liebermann\, who ended her own life rather than be deported to Theresienstadt. \n* The actors speak German in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Tisha B’Av Film Schedule 2023
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Park East Synagogue’s Film Society\nRegina Gil\, Chairperson\nCourtesy of Gold Coast Arts Center \nFilm Lineup: \n\n\n\n \nThose Who Remained\nWatch the trailer \n2019 ‧ Drama/Narrative ‧ 1h 23m\nDirected by Barnabás Tóth\nWritten by Klára MuhiBarnabás\, TóthZsuzsa and F. Várkonyi \nA lyrical story of the healing power of love in the midst of national conflict\, loss and trauma\, Those Who Remained reveals the healing process of Holocaust survivors through the eyes of a young girl in post-World War II Hungary. Part of the idea of the film\, directed by Barnabas Toth and based on a novel by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi\, is that only survivors could understand the solace that Klara and Aldo find in their tentative parent-daughter bond. But the trauma of the war and sorrow over the dead lingers for its two main characters\, who become part of each other’s lives\, more or less as replacements. \n* The actors speak Hungarian in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n \nThe Conference\nWatch the trailer \n2022 ‧ War/Drama ‧ 1h 52m\nDirected by Matti Geschonneck\nWritten by Magnus Vattrodt and Paul Mommertz \nA fictionalized TV film on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the historical event\, based on the minutes of the meeting written by Adolf Eichmann at the time. \nOn January 20\, 1942\, high-ranking representatives of the German Nazi regime met in an idyllic villa on the Great Wannsee in the southwest of Berlin for a meeting that went down in history as the Wannsee Conference\, because of its scope\, fatality and consequences\, perhaps the most terrible conference of human history. Present are 15 leading men of the SS\, the NSDAP and the ministerial bureaucracy. The exclusive topic of the approximately 90-minute discussion is what the National Socialists called the “Final Solution to the Jewish Question”\, which means the bureaucratically strictly planned organization of the systematic mass murder of millions of Jews from all over Europe. \n* The actors speak German in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n \nExodus 91: The untold story of Operation Solomon\nWatch the trailer \n2023 ‧ Docu-Drama ‧ 1h 30m\nDirected by Micah Smith\nWritten by Eitan Anner \nA docu-narrative film that tells the story of Asher Naim\, an Israeli diplomat caught between worlds and facing a crisis of faith in himself and his country. Asher\, a North-African Jew himself\, is sent to Ethiopia to negotiate the escape of 15\,000 Ethiopian Jews from a country collapsing under famine and civil war. Working with his Ethiopian-Israeli colleagues who\, themselves\, immigrated to Israel a decade earlier\, Asher and his partners begin to question if the Israeli government is serious or using the operation as part of an elaborate publicity stunt against claims that “Zionism is Racism.” With rebel forces closing in on the capital\, Asher’s faith in his mission is put to the test as he navigates the treacherous world of bureaucracy and politics in Ethiopia\, Israel\, and the US. Exodus 91 takes viewers behind the scenes – and behind the spin – of Operation Solomon\, the diplomatic and military mission to bring thousands of Ethiopian Jews to Israel in the midst of Ethiopia’s brutal civil war. The feature-length film explores challenging questions of racism\, white saviour-ism\, homeland\, cultural identity\, the politics of immigration\, and the hardships of these immigrants\, and those that followed them\, to this day. \n* The actors speak Hebrew and English in this film\, subtitles are present in the viewing\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Film Society Presents: Neighbours
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Park East Synagogue’s Film Society\nRegina Gil\, Chairperson\nCourtesy of Gold Coast Arts Center \nWritten and Directed by Mano Khalil \nSwitzerland\, France\, 2021 / Drama / Kurdish / Running Time: 124 \nDescription: In a Syrian border village in the early 80’s\, little Sero attends school for the first time. A new teacher has arrived with the goal of making strapping Panarabic comrades out of the Kurdish children. To enable paradise to come to earth\, he uses the rod to forbid the Kurdish language\, orders the veneration of Assad and preaches hate of the Zionist enemy- the Jews. The lessons upset and confuse Sero because his long-time neighbors are a lovable Jewish family. With a fine sense of humor and satire\, the film depicts a childhood which manages to find light moments between dictatorship and dark drama. Little Sero gets involved in dangerous pranks with his friends\, and dreams of having a television so he can finally watch cartoons. But he also experiences how the adults around him are increasingly crushed by the despotism\, violence and nationalism which surround them. \nThe film was inspired by the director’s personal experiences\, and so his bitter-sweet memories connect the Syrian tragedy to the present. \n \nAwards:  \nAudience Award (Best Feature) ” Spokane Jewish Cultural Film Festival 2022\nWINNER! SUMMARY:Film Society Presents: Farewell\, Mr. Haffmann
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Park East Synagogue’s Film Society\nRegina Gil\, Chairperson\nCourtesy of Gold Coast Arts Center \nWritten and Directed by Fred Cavayé \nFrance\, Belgium\, 2022 / Drama / French / Running time: 115 minutes \nDescription: Occupied Paris\, 1941: all members of the Jewish community are instructed to come forward and identify themselves to authorities. Dedicated jeweller Joseph Haffmann (Daniel Auteuil)\, fearing the worst\, arranges for his family to flee the city and offers his employee François Mercier (Gilles Lellouche) the chance to take over his store until the conflict subsides. But his own attempts to escape are thwarted\, and Haffmann is forced to seek his assistant’s protection. \nIt’s a risky proposition for both men\, and one that Mercier’s wife Blanche (a wonderful Sara Giraudeau) is sceptical of. As the couple move in to the Haffmann home\, the agreement turns into a Faustian bargain\, one that will forever change the fate of all… \nSuperbly directed by Cavayé\, FAREWELL\, MR. HAFFMANN masterfully guides the viewer through the world of Vichy France\, where lives are irrevocably shaped by the twin scourges of war and the black market. Rich in moral complexity and empathy\, with several twists too good to spoil\, this is grand\, big-screen adult entertainment at its finest. \n \nAwards: \nAudience Award – Gold Coast International Film Festival 2022\nAudience Award – Cleveland Jewish Film Festival 2022\nAudience Award – Aspen Filmfest 2022\nAudience Award – Best Narrative San Francisco Jewish Film Festival 2022 \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Film Selection(Required)Farewell\, Mr. HaffmannNeighboursSchächtenHow many Members tickets would you like to purchase?(Required)Members Tickets - $25 per person01234How many Non-Members tickets would you like to purchase?(Required)Non-Members Tickets - $35 per person01234Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Film Society Members & Non-Members Tickets quantity\n	\n	\n\n Add to cart\n\n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n	\n	Category: Ticket\n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n	\n\n Related products\n \n\n \n \n	Friday Night Dinner with Bernard-Henri Lévy\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur seats Parallel Service\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Seats • Main Sanctuary • 2023\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	Passover Seder – Saturday\, March 31\nSelect options

SUMMARY:Film Society Presents: Image of Victory
DESCRIPTION:June 15\, 2022 at 7PM\nLight dinner will be served \nPresented by Park East Synagogue’s Film Society\nRegina Gil\, Chairperson\nCourtesy of Gold Coast Arts Center \nBased on true events in 1948\, two cultures have their values tested as an Egyptian filmmaker is tasked with documenting a raid on an isolated kibbutz commune. As the situation escalates and takes unexpected turns\, both sides must re-evaluate everything they know about life and war. \n“In more than two decades of professional movie reviewing and even more of movie-going\, it is one of the best movies I have ever seen.” Hannah Brown\, Jerusalem Post (Click to read full review) \nWatch the trailer: \n \n \n \n\n	\n	\n \n\n\n	\n \n\n	\n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Film Selection(Required)Farewell\, Mr. HaffmannNeighboursSchächtenHow many Members tickets would you like to purchase?(Required)Members Tickets - $25 per person01234How many Non-Members tickets would you like to purchase?(Required)Non-Members Tickets - $35 per person01234Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n Name(Required)\n \n \n \n First\n \n \n \n \n Last\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n Film Society presents: Image of Victory quantity\n	\n	\n\n Add to cart\n\n \n\n	\n\n\n	\n	\n	Category: Ticket\n	\n	\n\n	\n\n	\n	\n\n Related products\n \n\n \n \n	Dinner Dance Journal Ads and Reservations\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	Sunday Shkola Purim Party\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	On The Map\nSelect options	\n \n\n\n \n \n	Tickets – Reserved\n	$0.00\nRead more

She graced local and international stages\, stirring millions with her beguiling voice and spectacular performance. Yet behind the larger-than-life persona and her memorable songs was a woman about whom we know little. She didn’t like to be interviewed and never volunteered details about herself and her family. Hers was the life of a Hollywood legend and she paid the price for it. This is a story about fame and loneliness\, acclaim and loss\, daring and compromise. For the first time\, the woman behind the crown\, the cloak and the palace will come to light. \nWatch the trailer: \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:1945 Film Viewing
DESCRIPTION:August\, 1945. A remote Hungarian town prepares for the wedding of the village magistrate’s son. Meanwhile two Orthodox Jews arrive at the village train station with two coffin-shaped wooden crates\, supposedly filled with soaps and perfumes. When the town gets wind of their arrival\, rumors spread as to their intentions. Are these men going to set up shop? Is this a harbinger of the return of more Jews? Led by the boorish village magistrate\, the townspeople fear that these strangers may be heirs of the village’s denounced and deported Jewish neighbors and have come to claim their family’s stolen property. Paranoia runs rampant\, leading to tragic events and a potent\, unexpected ending. \n7:00 pm – Dinner\n7:30 pm – Movie \nMembers: $25 |  Non-Members: $35 \n

SUMMARY:Film Society Screening of "Tuviansky"
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, December 16\, 2015\n“Tuviansky”\n7:00 PM Dinner and Movie\nIn 1948 Tuviansky\, a captain in the Israeli army and a former major in the British army\, was arrested. Within four hours he was interrogated\, tried\, sentenced\, executed and his body was thrown into a pit in the ground. \nTuviansky was accused of treason because he had innocently supplied a list to his British boss at the power plant – a list of vital institutions whose power supply was not interrupted even during power cuts. The locations on the list had been shelled before Tuviansky passed the list to his boss. However\, passing on the list was enough for the head of security in Jerusalem\, a Major Glibly\, to start an investigation\nand in no time\, to execute Tubianski. \nA year later Tuviansky was found innocent. His executioners were then tried and moderately punished. \n
